Overview

50- 70% of adults in the Unites States have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. Up to 15% of them will go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a 12 month period, about 3.6% of the US population has PTSD. Rates are higher in women and military veterans. PTSD often goes unrecognized, with only about half of those suffering getting treatment for it, and even when they do get treatment, only 42% are getting minimally adequate treatment. Related disorders, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and substance abuse, add to the confusion in recognizing this disorder and providing effective treatment. The costs of untreated illness are high. People suffering from PTSD use medical and mental health services at much higher rates, even though their PTSD is often unrecognized, and the costs of decreased productivity, missed work, and disability add to the economic burden of this illness.

Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital are pleased to offer this comprehensive conference on Posttraumatic Stress and Related Disorders. This intensive, two-day course brings together some of the foremost authorities in the field, with expertise in not just the science of this disorder, but the art of treating suffering patients and families. Numerous aspects of treatment will be covered, including psychopharmacology, different psychotherapeutic approaches, family work, and neurotherapeutics. Additionally, emphasis on working with high-risk populations, such as women, veterans, and adolescents will be addressed. Diagnostic confusion and controversies around issues such as dissociation, distinguishing borderline personality disorder from complex PTSD, and substance abuse will also be addressed. Panel presentations, question and answer sessions, and other engaging learning formats will be used to assist you in developing new strategies that you can apply as soon as you return to your practice setting.
